What Does JDM Mean?
JDM stands for “Japanese Domestic Market,” which refers to vehicles and parts designed specifically for the Japanese market. Originally, JDM simply described cars sold and marketed within Japan. However, the term has evolved, especially among enthusiasts in countries like the U.S., where cars customized to match Japanese specifications and aesthetics are often referred to as “JDM.”
The difference between Japanese tuning cars and “JDM” is primarily in their purpose. Japanese tuning cars are typically built for speed and performance, while “JDM” vehicles focus on capturing the unique vibe and culture of Japanese cars.
A Special Rule Born in the U.S. for Right-Hand Drive Cars
In the United States, where vehicles drive on the right side of the road, federal law generally requires left-hand drive vehicles for road use. As a result, right-hand drive cars are not permitted on public roads. Despite this, Japanese sports cars continue to be imported into the U.S. Why are these right-hand drive Japanese cars, which should be prohibited, so popular?
The popularity of older Japanese sports cars in the U.S. can be attributed to a regulation known as the “25-Year Rule.” This rule, introduced by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), is part of the Imported Vehicle Safety Compliance Act of 1988. It allows vehicles that are at least 25 years old to be classified as classic cars. This designation exempts them from standard requirements such as crash safety tests, emissions regulations, and certain import duties that apply to newer cars.
This rule has created a pathway for enthusiasts to legally import and drive iconic Japanese sports cars in the U.S., fueling their popularity among collectors and car lovers alike.
The Spark Behind the JDM Craze
The “Fast and Furious” series, now one of the most popular franchises in the world for car-related movies, played a pivotal role in the explosive rise of Japanese car popularity in the U.S. The timeline of this blockbuster series aligns perfectly with the boom in JDM popularity across America.
In the movies, cars from all over the world take center stage, including Japanese, American, and European models. From sports cars and muscle cars to vintage classics, the films showcase a wide variety of iconic vehicles. Among the most popular cars featured in the series are the Toyota Supra (A80), Honda Civic Coupe (EJ1), Mitsubishi Eclipse (D32), Nissan Fairlady Z Z33 (350Z), Nissan Skyline GT-R BCNR33, Nissan Skyline GT-R BNR34, Mazda RX-7 FD3S, and Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VII CT9A.
These JDM legends have gained massive popularity worldwide, and their value has skyrocketed over time. Some models now sell for three to six times their original price, cementing their status as highly sought-after collector’s items.
Drift Cars Are Hugely Popular Too
Drift cars like the Toyota Chaser, Cresta, and Mark II have also gained immense popularity worldwide. When tourists visit Japan, the cars that often stop them in their tracks, prompting them to take countless photos, aren’t Ferraris or Lamborghinis—they’re Japan’s own JDM and drift cars.
Can You Rent JDM Cars?
Yes, there are a few rental car companies in Japan that offer JDM vehicles. However, many JDM cars are over 20 years old, which makes regular maintenance challenging. Only rental car companies run by true car enthusiasts are likely to include JDM cars in their lineup.
